Because of its daring and controversial lyrics, Katy Perry’s debut single I Kissed a Girl initially met with a strong resistance from her music label and radio promoters. But the gender-bending song eventually became a huge commercial success and is recognized as the 10th best selling single of the 21st century. The singer says that the song is « about the magical beauty of a woman », and was partially inspired by her friendship with a girl as a teenager.
